The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrologie Institute of Germany. PTB's tasks are the determination of fundamental and natural constants, the realization, maintenance and dissemination of the legal units of the SI, safety technology and metrology for the area regulated by law, for industry, and for technology transfer. As the basis for its tasks, PTB conducts fundamental research and development in the field of metrology in close cooperation with universities, other research institutions, and industry. For these tasks equipment and test facilities are necessary, which were developed, designed and fabricated in the Department “Scientific Instrumentation”. The applied coating technologies (e. g. electroplating, evaporation, sputtering and HiPIMS) were also used in combination with micro structuring. One scientific task of the department is the development of thin film sensors.
